Texas

Well howdy there, I suppose this is the part of the program where I say what all this is even about. If you're like me, you like history, a lot. Unfortunately, one soon discovers there is absolutely no way to learn it all. A person soon sees it's a bit easier when the focus is on one particular topic or study, but then still just as quickly sees just how complex that small part soon becomes. The focus of this blog is on one of the most fascinating times and places in American History, Texas, with particular focus given to the events between 1800-1850, but that's not a maxim set in stone.

Just saying this word can conjure up a vast array of images and ideas, no matter who you are. The Alamo, David Crockett, Stephen F. Austin, James Bowie, gunslingers, Indians, rangers, cowboys, longhorns, heroes, villains, bravery, freedom, honor, the list is endless. Most people content themselves in this simple place, or maybe even in the world portrayed in fiction, be it a fine Louis L'Amour book, or the latest movie or television series. The actual history is readily found, in journals, treatises, military papers, ledgers, and all other literature written for us by people from the past. It is from these sources, their research by modern historians, and the efforts of archeologists that a glimpse of the past can be had. You may expect posts on books and materials published, first hand and second, that have helped to advance my research, and hopeful will help in yours.

Some people wish for at least a slightly larger facet to be opened to them, they know what daily life reads like, but what did it feel like, the sights, the sounds, the smells, the tastes. Living History is a means to encapsulate book knowledge into the tangible. What means and devices were used to obtain the items used in the day to day. What crops were planted and why, how did the practice of cattle raising evolve, what is homespun, how were moccasins made and who wore them, what was considered fashionable in the times, how were tools formed and what influenced their design. These questions and others will be written on in detail.

And finally, no one can pass up on a good story, and Texas is chock full of those! From the famous to the obscure, you may expect to read about the actual men and women who made and were made by Texas. It is from these stories we living can find the strength and courage to live our own lives in such a way that our own descendants can be proud of us.

Thank you for joining me in this venture, I'll see you further on down the trail.
